How to measure for new UPVC French Doors
How to Measure for New uPVC French Doors
Teign Trade Frames – Measurement Guide
1. Tools & Preparation
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
-
A reliable tape measure (preferably in millimetres)
-
A notepad and pencil for notes and sketches
-
A spirit level (optional but helpful)
-
A clear area around the existing opening
Tip: It’s helpful to sketch the door area and mark where the lead door (first to open) will be.
2. Measure the Brick-to-Brick Opening
Width:
-
Take 3 measurements: top, middle and bottom of the opening (brick-to-brick)
-
Write down the smallest of these three measurements – this will be the most accurate
Height:
-
Measure from the top of the opening (usually under the lintel) to the bottom (usually the threshold or brickwork)
-
Again, take 3 measurements: left side, centre, and right side
-
Record the smallest height
3. Check for Squareness
Measure diagonally from corner to corner both ways:
-
Top-left to bottom-right
-
Top-right to bottom-left
The difference between these two measurements should be no more than 5 mm. If it’s more, the opening isn’t square and may require adjustment or a larger fitting tolerance.
4. Apply Installation Tolerance
To ensure your doors fit correctly, subtract 10 mm from both the width and the height measurements. This creates space for fitting and adjustment.
Example:
-
Measured Width: 1240 mm
-
Measured Height: 2090 mm
-
Final Width to Order: 1230 mm
-
Final Height to Order: 2080 mm
5. Measure the Frame Depth (Optional)
If you want to match the depth of your current frame or check how the new frame will sit, measure from the inside face of the opening to the outer face (reveal depth). This can help you choose the right frame profile or finishing trims.
6. Final Checks
-
Confirm your measurements are in millimetres
-
Double-check all dimensions before placing an order
-
Make a clear sketch showing:
-
Width and height
-
Lead door (first to open) position
-
Whether the doors open inwards or outwards
-
-
Note whether there is a cill or threshold included in your height measurement
